Why Is Roofing a Great Career for Women?

As a high-energy, team-based industry with stable jobs and opportunities for growth and development, roofing offers many careers for women. In fact, the roofing industry is full of women making a difference in all facets, from administration to installation to management. This includes women like Ethelmae Humphreys, a roofing industry icon who helped build and lead TAMKO Building Products for 73 years until she passed away in 2021.

As the number of women in roofing grows, so do the resources that support them. For example, the volunteer-based organization National Women in Roofing (NWiR) was created to advance women's careers in roofing and provide networking, mentorship and education opportunities.

Beacon recognizes that many women, like Humphreys and the volunteers at NWiR, are meaningfully impacting the roofing industry and deserve to be recognized for their achievements.

Who Is Eligible for Female Roofing Professional of the Year?

All female roofing professionals who are residents of the United States or Canada are eligible for nomination. You can nominate yourself by submitting an essay about your experience and why you deserve to win the contest. Members of the public and professional colleagues are also encouraged to nominate a woman in the industry who has faced adversity or gone above and beyond for a customer, a co-worker or her community.

When Does the Competition Run?

To be eligible, all nominations must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on April 10, 2023. Submissions must include a short essay, an application and a photo.

This year's five finalists will be announced in May and members of the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalists between May 14 and June 5, 2023. Beacon will announce the winner and runners-up on June 14.

What Are the Prizes?

The four runners-up will receive $1,000 in prize money to support further professional development. The grand-prize winner will receive $10,000.

Last year, Beacon received hundreds of submissions. They featured inspiring stories of leadership from women in roofing at various levels in their careers and across all areas of the industry, including installers, office managers, project managers, siding professionals, payroll and accounting professionals, marketers, owners and more.

Michelle Mulder, owner of Nailed It Roofing in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, was named the winner of the 2022 Female Roofing Professional of the Year competition. Take a look at all of the 2022 finalists for more inspiration.
