Corporate Responsibility - Social
Talent development, community engagement, diversity and inclusion, civility, and safety are just a few areas important to Beacon and our stakeholders.
Diversity & Inclusion Council & Charter
In 2020, we created a cross-functional Diversity and Inclusion Council comprised of employee volunteers who provide expertise, advice, and counsel to the Company on diversity and inclusion strategies. The Council developed a D&I Charter to state our purpose and mission, engaged with external partners to further guide our Council and identify opportunities, held Conversations of Understanding, conducted focus groups with leaders in underrepresented groups, established an intranet site and rolled out training and education on Diversity and Inclusion.
Our D&I journey has only just begun, but we have already seen the efforts advancing throughout the company. The Council aims to attract, develop, and retain a workforce that is representative of the communities in which we work and live, Additionally, the Council aims to foster a culture where sharing ideas is encouraged, and all voices can be heard. Since the council was formed, we’ve hired diverse talent in several leadership roles including our Board of Directors and Executive Committee. We are working to expand our external partnerships with organizations focused on gender and ethnic diversity to support our talent pipeline. We have also engaged with field and functional leadership to ensure shared ownership for authentic and sustainable outcomes. We are confident the D&I Council will continue to grow and thrive over time and will help promote and embrace diversity and inclusion at Beacon.
“Beacon is taking steps to expand our role as an employer that champions diversity, inclusion and equality of opportunity. I believe that everyone at our company must have the opportunity to reach their full potential in order for the business to realize its full potential.” Julian Francis, President & CEO
At Beacon, putting people first is a core value. When one of the communities where we live and work needs help, or if any of our co-workers face an unexpected hardship resulting from a natural disaster, an emergency, or a personal tragedy, we want to step up with support. We established the Beacon CaReS Fund to assist employees in coping with unexpected financial hardships that place undue stress on an employee and his or her family.
Beacon has contracted with America’s Charities, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization based in Virginia, to administer and manage its CaReS Fund. America’s Charities is responsible for the management of the Fund, including performing all reviews and decisions for all applications. Further information is available on the employee application portal.
The company supports operation of the Fund and welcomes donations from employees and others wanting to help co-workers experiencing unexpected hardship. Donations are tax-deductible and all grants made from Beacon CaReS are tax-free.
Uplifting Veterans with a Beacon of Hope
Beacon is proud to employ over 175 Veterans and is committed to hiring and retaining military Veterans, Reservists and National Guard members. We recognize that many Veterans who have served our country often face adversity in the years following their service. The hardships they endure include financial issues, unemployment, mental and physical health challenges, homelessness and so many more.
As an exterior building products distributor, we brought to bear our specialty: a safe place to live. We launched Beacon of Hope to give back to our Veterans who are in need of a basic necessity, a secure roof. We hope to inspire our employees, customers, and communities to come together to help us in our efforts to provide our Vets with a Beacon of Hope.
Now in its second annual cycle, this contest runs via a public nomination process, followed by public voting for the ten finalist. In the end, three deserving Veterans receive full roof replacements and an additional seven receive funding to support their roof project. Beacon of Hope allows us the privilege to provide a safe roof that the Veterans in our communities can be proud of and that will protect their family and belongings.
Recognizing Women in the Roofing Industry
Beacon inaugurated its North American Female Roofing Professional of the Year competition in 2021. Seeking to highlight the hardworking and successful women in the roofing industry, we encourage the public and roofing community to nominate female leaders who have led by example- women who have accomplished great results, led teams, innovated, or have done something important for their roofing company or the industry.
Stephanie Pouse, partner at Brahma Roofing & Construction in Windsor, Colorado won the inaugural title, and an additional four finalists were also recognized. Beacon will continue the program annually to spotlight distinguished women in roofing.
“We received a tremendous number of votes in support of the five fantastic finalists that far surpassed our expectations,” said Jamie Samide, Vice President of Marketing at Beacon. “The overwhelming response to their powerful stories is a testament to the impact women are having on the industry and their communities. We’re grateful to everyone who helped us illuminate female leadership in the roofing industry."
